Migraine is more than a headache. It's a throbbing pain, often on one side, that can come with nausea and sensitivity to light and sound, and can take you out for a day or more. At Elixir Ayurveda, our doctors combine classical treatments for the head with diet and routine changes, to help reduce how often migraines come and how strong they are.

About migraine

Migraine is a neurological condition that tends to run in families. Attacks are often set off by triggers such as stress, poor sleep, skipped meals, dehydration, bright light, strong smells, hormonal changes or certain foods. Some people see flashing lights or zig-zags before an attack (an aura).

In Ayurveda, migraine is related to Ardhavabhedaka (a one-sided headache), linked mainly to Vata and Pitta. Treatment focuses on the head, digestion and a steady routine.

Get emergency help for a sudden, severe headache unlike any before, or a headache with weakness, numbness, confused speech, loss of vision, fever with a stiff neck, or after a head injury.

How we treat it

Your doctor plans treatment after taking a detailed history of your attacks and triggers. It usually includes:

  • Nasya: herbal oil drops through the nose, the classical treatment for conditions of the head
  • Shirodhara: a steady stream of warm herbal oil or medicated buttermilk over the forehead, to calm the nervous system
  • Virechana: a gentle, guided cleanse to settle excess Pitta, if suitable
  • Head and neck massage and herbal medicines
  • For home: a regular routine for meals, sleep and screen use, and a trigger diary

Questions

Can Ayurveda stop my migraines? Many patients find their migraines come less often and are milder after treatment and the right routine. No treatment can promise they'll stop completely. We'll give you an honest view after your consultation.

What if I get a migraine during my stay? Tell the staff straight away. The doctor will adjust your treatments that day, and you can rest in your room.

Can I keep taking my migraine medicines? Yes. Keep taking your prescribed medicines, and tell our doctor what you take, including painkillers. Agree any change with your own doctor.

Does Nasya hurt? No. It's a few drops of warm herbal oil in each nostril, with a face and head massage before it. Some people feel a brief tingling.

What should I bring? A note of how often you get migraines and what seems to trigger them, plus any scans or reports.
